Brisbane is my hometown and will forever carry that label - not surprising given that is where I spent my formative years. Nonetheless, Canberra is my home, if that makes sense?

In my day, one of the best things about Brisbane was the great indie music scene - most of it a reaction to the conservative (and corrupt) political practices - from proto-punks, the Saints, through to current bands like Powderfinger. But the greatest Brisbane band is the Go-Betweens (the judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into). And before anyone reminds me, I apologise in advance for Brisbane inflicting Savage Garden upon the world.

The Go-Betweens had a (minor) hit, as indie bands occasionally do, with Streets of Your Town. The song has a beautiful, boppy, catchy, melodic feel to it - so good that about 6 years after its release one of the national TV networks picked it up as their promo tune. Everytime I hear the song, including the first time I ever heard it, images of Brisbane enter my head. However, while the tune is catchy, the TV station never plays the lyrics, apart from the chorus:

Round and round, up and down,
Through the streets of your town,
Everyday, I make my way
Through the streets of your town.
(Chorus)

Don't the sun look good today?
But the rain is on its way
Watch the butcher shine his knives
And this town is full of battered wives.
(hmmm I wonder why they never play that?)

Anyway that's a long way of explaining my take on this week's Illustration Friday topic: home.

But not to be outdone there is also a guest artist this week, my daughter, Isabella - hopefully she'll become a semi-regular contributor as well.
