Iíve had this (ghoulish) idea in my head for a while now and just needed an excuse to put pencil to paper. Iím fascinated that one can find such a variety of road kills within Canberra (pop. 300,000), even as close as 1.5 kilometres from the CBD. Within the last couple of months I have come across 4 kangaroos, 3 foxes, 2 possums and 1 wombat Ö..and a partridge in a pear tree. That last bit isnít true, although Iíve stumbled across flattened magpies, cockatoos, rosellas and currawongs over this time as well.

However, Iím yet to come across the biggie for all road kill aficionados ñ Salmo Trutta. When I do, Iíll be breaking out the champers.

Check out the other entries on

poor dear, let’s hope his effort at finding his path, (didn’t he get the message it was back upstream ?) will result in better things in his next reincarnation.

Detlef, you’re sick, sick, sick (in the very best way.)
Love your drawings, always. Karen

I think I agree with Karen and maybe I shouldn’t have been eating dinner at my computer tonight.  But I’m also a little sick, sick, sick because I really like it.

this really brings back memories…when i first drove through the outback of oz i couldn’t believe the debris on the roads…and that none of it was cleaned up or moved to the side. i guess it would be too big a job! birds, reptiles, mammals…poor wee critters!

He looks way to big to have been flushed down the toilet… Perhaps a bird of prey dropped the poor bloke.

Unreal execution… I love it!

Oooo… I actually saw this last week, but was in too much of a work frenzy to think up a good comment. This is classic Detlef… the extraordinary rendering with the Lynch-like leanings and sly humour creeping to the fore! Puts me in mind a bit of Jack Unruh ( http://www.jackunruh.com/ ), not just because of the subject, but in the way it’s rendered… particularly the blood spatter. Awesome.

In a way, this is looser for you! You asked on my blog if it was hard for me to loosen up… the answer is yes and no. Before I started working digitally, my drawing style was very loose and gestural. But when I started working digitally, I found I started getting tighter and tighter. Not necessarily my actual drawing, but my approach to illustration in general started changing. Now, I’m trying to move back and recapture the old freedom and confidence (more in my personal work than say the commissioned illustration I do for kids). I find that limiting the amount of time I spend on it helps alot, and trying to approach the drawing like a gesture drawing session in a life drawing class. Have you taken any life drawing courses? I’ve taken a quite a few in my time, but it’s been awhile. Am seriously thinking about taking one in the Fall, again trying to recapture old skills. drawing is so fundamental to any good illustration, you know?! Of course you know!!! Anyhow… sorry for the novel. I’m sure you’re sorry you asked now!!

Detlef, you become curiouser and curiouser. Honestly, I think it was stupidity on the part of the fish. And a bit of magic perhaps. No, salmon are excellent jumpers, aren’t they? Ah, that explains a lot. Maybe he wasn’t so much stupid as just misguided in love.
