My commitment to drawing has, of late, been sacrificed to maxing out big time watching the World Cup and now the Tour de France. So much so that this is my first IF entry since the site update. Well the World Cup only comes around once every 4 years - once every 32 years when Australia is involved. While the Tour de France comes around annually, this year is realistically the best opportunity for an Australian to win it, so my eyes are a blur watching all this live. Live in this case means midnight to dawn shifts - yes I am an elite spectator sports tragic. I think part of the reason why Australians (males) take their sport seriously is because we have to get up in the wee hours to watch prestige sporting events live....this builds commitment and an inculcation of living and appreciating the moment. Any one only needed to watch Stage 11 of le Tour to see the manifestation of sporting sacrifice....a cruel mountain stage through the Pyrenees.
Back to this drawing, which was done about 2 months ago and seems to fit the theme. This piece was inspired by artist Hieronymus Bosch, who was probably the precursor (by several hundred years) of Surrealism. Boschís paintings depict a nightmarish vision of humanity. I was reading about him over lunch one day and got thinking about what Bosch would eat if he was peckish. Given his view of the world, heíd probably have macabre tastes and wouldnít hesitate to improvise if he didnít have all the ingredients.
This piece was rendered in a mix of colour pencil and graphite accentuating the weirdness of it all.
OK, need sleep and after le Tour back to drawing, promise. <<Older Main Newer>>

Wow…what a unique take on the topic. Cleverly macabre. Very nice illustration.

Nice to see you back with your sometimes unusual view of the world. We have missed you.

I think I’ll go with the salad for lunch today.

Yes, but was Bosch able to swing round to the local grocery to pick up a bag of mass-produced bread like this?
Seriously, I ‘hear’ you with this one. Both witty and well drawn.

It could be Hieronymus Bosch, who did this! Creative, great!

Stunning, Detlef. Hey, when you’re hungry, you’re hungry…

Excellent black humour - I like it.
We were also very pleased to see Australia competing in the World Cup - spent a few weeks walking around bleary eyed… Yep, there’s no sports tragic like an Australian sports tragic!

How nice to see you back at IF, and with such a tasy treat! It’s amazing how believable this looks…if I wasn’t a vegetarian, I might want a sandwich like this!

Oh dear a pickled ear. Some people will eat anything when glued to the telly watching sport. An unusual piece. Regarding The Tour, the Polka Dot jersey was always the most prestigious rider for me.

How weird is that Bosch’s paintings, although inspired by religious love and commitment, depict cruel and obscure landscapes filled with suffering and confusion.
Nice drawing
