Managed to get back to the old hometown last week. It was both a nostalgic and cathartic experience. The fond memories were all about political activism and the vibrant music scene that developed as a counter to the pseudo police state that existed when I was living there (anyone interested in that socio-political history should read Pig City by Andrew Stafford). I think when the National Party regime folded back in 1989 a lot of my reason for being dissipated as well. I come back now and Brisbane strikes me as being an awkward city, shambolic in its development but with a rich, if black, history. I miss the music scene but not the city. A case in point was tracking down one of the seminal independent record stores, Rocking Horse, only to find no CDs in stock of a classic Brisbane band - the Riptides. How disappointing was that, almost a non-acknowledgement of its own history.
The highlight of the trip was at least being kindly referred to a Japanese restaurant, Sakura, which I now highly recommend as well.
PS why is it that every capital city in Australia now appears to have a ferris/big wheel fetish. <<Older Main Newer>>

Hey Detlef
Had lunch with Gallan and the Child Safety Minister yesterday and you were mentioned in conversation so it prompted me to check your website out again.
Ahh Brisbane in the 80’s so many memories so many beers.
Go to You Tube and type in Brisbane band documentary and you will find a great 6 part series on Brisbane bands who emerged in the 80’s.
