Medium: Colour Pencil/Graphite
Size: 180 mm x 150 mm
At long last I've pulled the proverbial finger out of the backside and started drawing again. I've had hell of a job conceiving and conceptualising what this drawing will look like. I'm still not sure what the final product will look like as it keeps changing and no doubt will continue to change as I go through the drawing process. Rather than fighting this battle in my mind it was time to fight it on paper, and see how it evolves.
Given the subject matter, it's probably appropriate that this drawing evolves as the subject matter is a Christmas Island red crab (+ associated other Christmas Island flora and fauna). Christmas Island is not that well known - lying somewhat remotely in the Indian Ocean, north-west of Western Australia - but for naturalists it justifiably famous for its annual red crab migration, as millions of these creatures leave their home on land to mate at sea. Supposedly, it is a bit of crab h(e)aven and somewhat like the Galapagos Islands, it's remoteness has meant it still retains several unique species of wildlife and plant life. I have it on good authority that it is also home to some massively large centipedes!
The natural light has been lousy today, being overcast and stormy for most of the day, so I've dawdled a bit. That crab took far too long, probably because I'm still coming to grips with the medium. The jungle vine came relatively easily so for a day's effort it's been fair progress. I intend the vast chunk of this drawing will be in graphite with only colour pencil being used for the fauna - or so the story goes. Hope that's the right approach because there is a hell of a lot work still to be done. Fingers crossed everything turns out OK, only time will tell.
