I happened by this rather tortuous game via Wee's site. Being the idiot that I am I immediately signed up to play, not knowing that the questions would be akin to those being asked of inmates at G(i)TMO. Nonetheless, I somehow believe that freedom can be obtained through most forms of self expression so I'm laying it on the line and spilling my guts to the canny and inquisitorial questioning of the aforementioned Wee.

1: How do you like your coffee?

Easy, white, no sugar - however the brew must be strong and definately not instant coffee, at the very least plunger coffee.

2: What mythical/fictional character so you most wish was real? Santa Claus? Godzilla? Daffy Duck? What one mythical/fictional character would you most like as a pet?

[It is apparent that Wee is a skilled interrogator, gives me an easy one first off and then follows up with a (few) curly one(s) - when I signed up to this I thought it was going to be 5 questions in total, you will note that in fact question 2 is really 5 questions.]

After a lot of thought I've gone for the Addams Family, over and above the Green Hornet and Indiana Jones. There's something about the kookiness of Gomez et al that I can relate to (sorry SC, giant lizard, and black duck).

I'm not a pet person, but I think I could cope with Sylvester the cat being around my digs - such great never say die perserverance and an endless schemer to boot!

3: What is the one singular character flaw that you simply cannot abide in another person? Is it lack of oral hygiene? Is it a love of Celine Dion, 'cuz that one certainly makes my top ten. Do tell.

Blatant hypocrisy - oh so evident in most politicians, and as I'm spilling my guts I also can't stand people who big note themselves.

However, any stinky breath Celine Dion fans are right up there as well.

4: What do you think about when you draw? Walk me through the process. What does it look like, feel like, smell like, sound like? Is it an arid place? Moist and leafy? Inhabited by dancing dwarves and grown men dressed as playing cards?

[I'm beginning to think this line of questioning must be in contravention of the Geneva Convention!]

When I draw I obviously think about the subject of the drawing, concentrating on looking beyond first impressions, trying to find some deeper meaning or intrinsic values. This probably explains my painstakingly slow work, but once I get in that "zone" there is a feeling of enlightenment - as if new insights and perspectives are gained. This also applies to the conceptualisation process prior to drawing, trying to compose the subject, thinking of a new take or angle. It obviously a place where the environment is verdant green and lush, because I continue to visit it. The dancing dwarves don't live there, although I suspect that they, David Lynch and other general quirky and macabre influences do reside somewhere in my psyche.

5: If you had a theme song that announced your arrival whenever you walked into the room, what would it be? Would you have separate departure music? Would any special sound/light effects accompany said theme?

This would greatly depend on my mood. In the main I don't think I'm a fanfare sort of guy (despite being a common man), prefering to hide my light under the bushel. I think the root of this question is really about trying to get a hold of one's personality through their muscial influences and tastes. So here's the list of musical influnces (Australian bands so labelled for any international visitors):

Billy Bragg, Blondie, The Breeders, Bruce Springsteen, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Cure, Elvis Costello, The Housemartins, The Jam, Joy Division, Kirsty MacColl, New Order, Pixies, REM, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, and The Sundays.

Australian Bands:
The Go-Betweens, The Triffids, The Chills (ok they're from New Zealand), and The Riptides.

It looks as if you want to get on the list having the definite article in the band's name is a good start.

6: Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever seen one? If not, do you want to?

[Reader you will note that's 6 questions, Wee is obviously confused, and appropos number confusion reminds me of the Pixies:

if man is 5; if man is 5, if man is 5,
then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6,
then god is 7, then god is 7, then god is 7,
this monkey's gone to heaven.]

I have to say that the rational skeptic in me says no, but the gothic romantic in me says yes, yes, yes. In this case I'm going to follow my heart and say yes.

It would be totally cool to see a ghost. However, if I don't see one in "real" life it's no great loss because I can always see them in my dreams.

So my handful of readers anyone want to play?

How about me, Detlef? Am I worth interviewing?

Posted by Robyn on 02.06.05 at 06.16pm

Robyn, as a regular and valued commenter on my blog it would indeed be an honour to interview you.  So stay tuned to your email, as I compose a range of questions which delve deeply into your very being.

It appears that you survived your interrogation well enough to compose complete sentences and include puzzling punctuation proferring phrases* like “the definite article”.

And it would appear you and I are pretty much in sympatico when it comes to music, though I know little of Australian bands employing the definite article or otherwise. The devil is, indeed, 6.

A pleasure as always, Detlef!!!

*Okay, okay… I’ll admit it… I may have sacrificed sense for alliteration there. So sue me.

xoxoxo Wee

And what? No pets? But I thought I read in your bio tha you have a cat AND a dog?!

Hi Wee, yes I survived.  At times I can be hardy and resilient.  Re: pets - it is true that I have a dog and a cat, which I didn’t deny, all I said was that I didn’t think I was a pet person.  I know you are shocked by this, especially my choosing Sylvester over a canine character. The Australian bands I think you would like, indeed will be seeing the Go-Betweens next month.  Thanks for your interest, invitation to be interviewed, and inspiration.

In regards to “freedom can be obtained through most forms of self expression”, believe genuine freedom canĂt be achieved through detachment from what is expected of us as ‘normal’ and the possibility of human failure can be eliminated only in death. Cheery mood today.

Enjoyed reading your interview. In regards to wanting to play - no comment.

As the Smiths would say: Thank heavens I’m miserable now.

When I was little Morticia was one of my faves. Love that dress and long black hair. And Cleopatra.
