Gravity (of the situation)

image

Medium: Pencil
Size: 420mm x 590mm

I had this idea floating around in my head for a while and eventually got around to drawing it.  It vaguely fits the theme - so why not submit it.  In this case, Bill [or submit your preferred name here] suddenly came to the realisation about the gravity of his situation.

This turned out slightly different than I had intended especially with respect to the tentacle.  Originally it was going to come from Bill’s side, but during the rendering phase it has taken on a more dynamic feel and at least the appearance of coming diagonally from the foreground to “greet” Bill [or whoever].  Unlike Doamna Tomescu no story to go with this one - you’ll just have to make up your own.

That drawing says it all! Very fun. (Fun, as long as it’s not me wearing an octopus scarf.)

Outstanding! I love the expression on his face. Impressive!

PS: I’ve add a link to your blog on my drawing blog. Hope you don’t mind.

hey there detlef,
another great face, can I ask if you had a reference for this expression or the mirror?
Don’t take that the wrong way

big surprise  big surprise  big surprise Uhoh! Worst than the encounter with a certain HellKitty...Mwhahahaha!

Merlinprincesse | 17 February 2007, 8.44 am

A quick response - firstly thanks.

Bookyeti: no problems.

Scott:  I had a reference and it wasn’t me, if only I looked that good. wink

MerlinP:  After I drew the face I thought it would be an appropriate recoil from any Hellcats.

margaret Hunt | 17 February 2007, 12.37 pm

ouch! great illustration, poor guy.

mariana | 17 February 2007, 5.39 pm

LOOOVE this piece!  It’s alarming, and humorous all at once.  I agree- The tentacle coming in from the right of the page is a lot more dynamic than it would be were it coming from his side.

Christeen | 18 February 2007, 12.18 am

Yes!  What a fantastic expression!  And the perspective on the tentacle makes the event even more immediate.  You’re a magician with that pencil, Detlef.

Roz | 18 February 2007, 2.08 am

wow. phantastic!

I have a feeling that this could somehow be related to the Doamna Tomescu story… it certainly has that sinister quality.  I love the startled expression on Yuri’s (I’ve changed his name) face.  He really should have listened to his intuition about trying to get sweet with Doamna.  That woman has a heart of...slime!

Your work always impresses me...you are amazing!

carla | 18 February 2007, 11.11 am

Holy cow, that is amazing!  Nice work!  smile

His eyeballs could pop out! Amazing!!!

valgalwalsh | 19 February 2007, 4.37 am

very grave indeed!

I have this feeling that Doamna is behind his travails. She could well have other techniques and octopoidal assault could certainly be one. He looks surprised. He never suspected Doamna would come at him with anything more lethal than an anchovy. Always a bad judge of character he has learned too little tooo late.

Great...always enjoy your style and technique...the layout is pretty funny as well...I went primarily graphite this week on mine having been inspired from your fishmonger lass…

Wow...this pops to life! It begs for captions like:
Bills’ honeymoon wasn’t going as well as he expected.

Lilah Dahl | 06 March 2007, 11.22 am

It is about time you came up with that self-portrait! And glad to Bill was included.

Nice new digs you have here.
